Why Wouldn’t We?

A Guide for Couples Who Want to Build Something Together

For couplepreneurs—couples who run a business together or are considering it. This is not another survival guide. It begins with a different belief: building together can be one of the great gifts of a shared life.

Our couplepreneur journey

Working and serving together helped shape who we became.

For more than 25 years, our work has not simply been something we did beside one another. It has been one of the biggest contributions to who we are today.

Our shared work began with an idea, a great deal of conversation and a simple question: why wouldn’t we? Since 1998, we have built businesses, organizations, resources and communities side by side. We have made decisions around kitchen tables, worked long weekends, divided responsibilities, changed direction, celebrated what succeeded and carried one another through what did not.

When we developed our first business, we made couples working together part of the model. As the work expanded into other communities, we invited couples—not simply individuals—to build and lead together. We believed their different strengths could complement one another, that shared responsibility could make the work stronger and that the journey itself could become part of the formation of their relationship.

That conviction grew out of our own experience. Building together has never meant that we are the same. I tend to see possibility quickly and move toward the moment; Rosanne takes time to understand what is true, what matters and what will hold together. I expand the horizon. She sharpens the map. Those different instincts have often been the reason the work could grow—and the reason it could endure.

Over time we found a shared rhythm beneath those differences: recognize what is happening, understand what it means, and respond faithfully. The work challenged us, shaped us and gave us a shared life we could never have created independently.

This guide comes from that lived experience. We wrote it to encourage other couples already sharing a business—or quietly wondering whether they could build something together.

Why we wrote it

Not a survival guide. An invitation to possibility.

Almost everything written about couples working together begins with the danger: how to survive it, how to avoid conflict or how to keep the business from harming the marriage. Those questions matter—but they are not the whole story.

Why Wouldn’t We? begins somewhere else. It asks what two people might build because they know one another deeply, carry different strengths and are willing to place those strengths in service of something shared.

The guide offers encouragement, practical reflection and room to consider purpose, individual strengths, expectations, money, roles, boundaries and the relationship beneath the business. Our hope is not that you copy our journey. It is that you recognize the possibility within your own.

Inside the guide

Practical questions for work—and for the relationship carrying it.

Nine short sections move from deciding before you begin to building a model that serves the marriage, not the other way around.

Decide before you go

Talk honestly about what you are building, what success means and what neither of you is willing to lose.

Know the pairing

Recognize the different strengths, instincts and roles already present between you.

Set lanes and limits

Clarify responsibility, boundaries, rest and the point at which help needs to be hired.

Protect the marriage

Let the business model change when necessary; do not ask the relationship to carry every cost.
